If I Could, I Wood

  • Gallery 2424 2424 Drayton Street Savannah, GA, 31401 United States (map)

An exhibit of handmade furniture pieces and art objects by artist and designer Marta M. McWhorter.

The artist will be showing a compilation of recent 2D and 3D works in which she has employed wood to bring her ideas to life. Marta is a multidisciplinary artist living and working in Savannah Georgia for the past 20 years. She describes her creative journey as if she is walking down three winding paths, while looking for where they join into one. This references the three distinct creative careers she has embodied and how she has strived to merge them into one cohesive creative practice over the years. Those three creative paths are Lighting, Fine Art and Woodworking. Marta has been lighting the stage at the Lucas theatre for 18 years. Chances are if you have seen a show in the theatre you have seen her artistry at work. She is a long time member of Kobo Gallery at 33 Barnard Street in downtown Savannah, where she shows her fine art in the form of drawings, paintings, and sculptural installation works. Last, but not least, Marta owns and operates her own cabinet and fabrication shop just west of downtown Savannah, where she has designed and built many custom cabinetry projects for both residential and commercial clients. As a lifelong learner, Marta has been attending classes at SCAD in pursuit of a degree in Furniture Design. She states, “Furniture Design is the place where I feel I can most easily combine all of my creative disciplines, from lighting and spatial relations to fabrication and process, it has it all. It touches every highlight of my creative abilities and gives me endless new materials and processes to explore!”

The work on view will showcase some of the furniture design work and fine art she has recently made in combination with sketches and process videos. Marta will be in the gallery for several hours each day to talk about the work. There will be work for sale, and commissions are always accepted!
